The Land of Sometimes – out this week! – Win a CD.

The Land of Sometimes is an audio storybook of songs and narration. It tells a tale of twins Alfie and Elise as they travel to The Land of Sometimes and meet a collection of characters, each with his or her own song. Accompanying the cd is a small booklet with a colourful picture for each character.

My three year old daughter sat on the sofa, turning the page to look at each picture as we listened. I can’t help enjoying the feel-good harmony and cadence of a musical and the Land of Sometimes is in this genre. From the soaring introduction, as Alfie and Elise gaze out to the “silver line” of the horizon, I was keen to hear more. Jamilla enjoys it too, getting up to dance “this is fairy dancing” she says, turning round with her arms above her head.

The aim of this cd is to provide parents and grandparents with something to enjoy together with their children and grandchildren. The mix of musical styles should provide something for most tastes and I also found it a good discussion point with Jamilla, a way of expressing imagination and extending vocabulary – she described one character as “slippery sloppery”. This won’t be for all – it’s not high-brow music. But it is great fun. I think our favourite song is about Little Twink, a cheeky fairy who likes to make a mess. The song is more High School Musical than Mozart – but you should see us dance! SF

Grow with the Lunar Gardening Calendar

The biodynamic lunar gardening calendar shows you how to take advantage of the lunar cycle and harness the moons’ influence on sowing, planting  growing and harvesting fresh and healthy food.

The calendar is suitable for beginners but is also an attractive visual guide for experienced lunar gardeners.  It shows the daily moon phase, whether the moon is ascending or descending, and whether it is a root, leaf, flower or fruit day.

The colour coded wall chart (60cm by 42cm) comes with an explanatory booklet.  You will quickly learn when to sow salad leaves, transplant your tomato seedlings or harvest your root vegetables “In Tune with the Moon”.  For example, seeds germinate better with a waxing moon and germinate best before full moon.

The Starter Seed pack comes with 8 packets of high quality biodynamic  Demeter seeds, sourced from open pollinated plants.   The seed supplier is a Camphill trust that works with people with learning disabilities helping to give them a sense of purpose and an integrated daily routine.

For the chance to win the first prize of a lunar Calendar starter park (calendar, booklet, 8 packs of biodynamic seeds, seed guide and 8 oak labels) or one of 5 runner-up prizes of a lunar calendar with booklet, go to our competitions entry page.

Competition closes Wednesday 29th Feb at noon.

Win A Canvas of Art

Celia Pontin provides an alternative way to use your children’s pictures.

Some children produce so much fantastic artwork that it can be difficult to decide which pieces to display and how to conserve the rest. Celia Pontin from Oodles of Doodles has created a solution by taking the original artwork – from early paint swirls to collages and hand prints – and blending it into a single, composite, stunning and vibrant work of art, printed on canvas. The end result is a fabulous snapshot of artistic development.

“This idea occurred to me when wondering what to do with all the pictures my young son Joel brought home to me. I loved the mixtures of bright colours and textures and came up with the idea of scanning the originals and then creatively combining them using specialist computer software to produce one overall vibrant montage. My choice to then transform the montage into a unique canvas print seemed ideal: the cotton canvas provided the perfect media, beautifully combining the simplicity of the artwork with the quality of the natural material.”

The quality of prints is of vital importance. Disappointed by the varied results that came back when she sent images to canvas printing companies, Celia decided to invest in her own wide format printer, allowing her to take control of the entire process, from creating the montage designs to despatching the end product. She runs the Lincolnshire home-based business with her husband Graham: Celia creates the artwork and Graham prints, stretches and finishes the canvases.

Celia is offering JUNO readers the chance to win a 24 x 16 inch canvas of eight images – worth £85 (including postage and packaging). The winner will need to send original artwork to Celia and a large envelope is provided for this.
